LOCAL:

Indian Valley school officials continue to withhold details about why Superintendent Randy Cadle was suspended with pay indefinitely last week. Local ESC Superintendent Kevin Spears was named as an interim to run the district in Cadle’s absence Monday, but Spears and School Board President Francis Picchetti both declined further comment because of pending litigation between Cadle and the district. Spears says he is looking forward to a smooth transition.

Kevin Spears was named interim superintendent of the Indian Valley Local School District by a unanimous vote of the Board of Education Monday night.

Spears, superintendent of the Tuscarawas-Carroll-Harrison Educational Service Center at New Philadelphia, replaces Randy Cadle, who was suspended by the board during a meeting Thursday.

In a press release issued Friday, the board stated it is reviewing the contracted status of Cadle after a number of concerns were brought to its attention.

Cadle was relieved of all duties, according to the release. His name no longer appears on Indian Valley letterhead, and there was no name next to the position of superintendent on the board’s agenda for Monday’s session.

“Mr. Cadle was suspended for an indefinite period of time with pay, and there is pending litigation,” said Spears, adding that Indian Valley Board of Education legal representatives are involved in the matter. He said he was unsure of the legal representation of Cadle.

“This is a service we provide at no cost to the school,” he said of his appointment. “I hope to make this transition as smooth as possible and continue the everyday operations of the school as they were before.”

Spears explained that in years past, the county superintendent would serve a district when the need arose. That responsibility now goes with Spears’ position at ESC.

Board President Francis Picchetti declined to comment on the situation surrounding Cadle’s suspension because of the pending litigation. During the meeting, Picchetti thanked board members for their cooperation during the last couple of weeks, described as “difficult weeks.”

The meeting was attended by school administrative personnel and about 20 visitors, none of whom addressed the board.

Randy Cadle, Indian Valley Local Schools superintendent at Gnadenhutten, was suspended Thursday night by the Board of Education in a unanimous vote.

In a release issued Friday, the board said it is reviewing the contracted status of the superintendent in view of a number of concerns that have come to its attention.

“The board hopes to resolve this matter in the near future, and in the best interest of the students and the community. The Board of Education has no further comment at this time,” the news release stated.

Member Todd Herman moved and Kathy Roth seconded the motion for Cadle’s suspension from all duties until further notice. The action followed an executive session in a special meeting that had been announced in advance.

Attempts to contact Cadle for comment were unsuccessful.

In June 2007, the board rehired Cadle as superintendent after he retired, and at that time his salary was set at $86,795 a year, plus his pension from the state teachers retirement system. He previously was paid $90,266.

In December 2006, district teachers gave him a no-confidence vote in December after a personal e-mail by Cadle was forwarded to teachers, in which he talked about how he wanted to “smack every one of them.”

In April 2008 a teacher resigned in connection with that incident.

A regular board meeting will be held Monday at 7 in the high school multipurpose room at Gnadenhutten.
